I just use standard needles - nothing special. If you are working with fine fabrics, use thinner needles, if you are working with denim or other thick, sturdy fabric, use sturdier needles. If you are using thick thread, make sure the needle's eye is large enough for it. I cannot advise you about sewing with leather since I don't work with leather.
You can buy needle multi-packs at craft stores that have a variety of lengths, thicknesses, and eye sizes.
